Michael Edward Meyer

Michael Edward Meyer passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023.

Born on Nov. 12, 1962, he was the eldest son of Edward and Mary Ann (Armer) Meyer.

A 1981 Greencastle graduate, Mike was a three-sport, varsity athlete (football, baseball and wrestling). He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hanover College, where he played football and baseball. Mike went on to earn his Master of Arts in Teaching from DePauw University, where he coached alongside his father as a graduate assistant coach for football and baseball.

Following graduate school, Mike began a rich history of football coaching. He was a graduate assistant coach at Rice, Temple and Penn. From there, he became the defensive coordinator at Ohio Northern University, where he met the love of his life, eventually proposing to Brenda on the football field following a game.

Mike later became the head coach at Hiram College and then went on to coach at Case Western Reserve University, before returning home to coach at his alma mater, GHS, in 2005. He taught English for 18 years, was head coach for 13, and assistant coach for two. He also coached at Northview High School for three years and was currently coaching at Avon High School.

Mike married Brenda Swihart on June 6, 1992, and became the father of five children.

He is survived by his wife; children Madison, Mallary, Jacob and Jordan; sister Anne (Steve) Stewart; brothers Pete (Julie) Meyer, Patrick (Julie) Meyer and Tony (Denise) Meyer; aunt June Lynn (John) Grivetti; uncles Tim (Melissa) Meyer, Lee (Carol) Meyer and “Unkie” Mike Armer; 10 nieces and nephews; and many more cousins.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mackenzie; his parents, Edward and Mary Ann; and aunt Toni and uncle Keith Evans.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Meyer Scholarship Fund (The GiveWell Community Foundation, 1501 S. Florida Ave, Lakeland, FL 33803), or the Putnam County Humane Society.

The funeral service will be held at DePauw University’s Kresge Auditorium on Saturday, Aug. 12. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with a service at 1 p.m. led by Pastor Donnie Watson.
