David Eugene Summers, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1930, in Indianapolis, a son of the late Harry William Summers and Martha Washington (Obenchain) Summers Collett.

On April 9, 1950, he was married to Nellie Fay Perkins in Bainbridge. She passed away on March 9, 1983. He married Patty Lou (Allen) Walker Summers on Oct. 1, 1983, in Thorntown; she survives.

David was raised in the Bainbridge area and was a 1949 graduate of Bainbridge High School.

In 1952, he joined the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and in 1967 the FBI Academy. David attained a juris doctorate degree from IU School of Law in 1967.

He served the Indiana State Police for 21 years, retiring as a major in 1973. David practiced law for 26 years in Thorntown until his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of various organizations, including the Indiana State Police Legal Advisors (founder and president), International Association of Chiefs of Police (vice president), Boone County Bar Association (past president), Home National Bank (chairman), Thorntown Telephone Company (vice president), Thorntown Masonic Lodge (past master), Thorntown Public Library and The Gideons International. In addition, David was a member of Thorntown Christian Church for a number of years, where he served as elder, chairman of the church board and on several committees. While wintering in Florida, he and Patty had an associate membership at Heartland Christian Church in Sebring. The Summers enjoyed wintering in Sebring part time since 1988.

David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and loved his family dearly. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf and woodworking during retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Summers of Lebanon; children Brenda C. Summers of Indianapolis, Dianne H. Harcourt (Richard) of Zionsville and Barbara J. Lambacher (Thomas Fisher) of Galena, Ohio; stepchildren Teresa L. Lyles (Dave Styck) of Indianapolis and Dianna L. Dale (James) of Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, David was preceded in death by his stepfather, Paul G. Collett; brother James H. Summers; half-brother John Collett; half-sister Marcia Zimmerman; sons-in-law Shawn Lambacher and Rick Lyles; and a great-granddaughter, Celia Jo Harcourt.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., in Lebanon. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow at Bainbridge Cemetery in Bainbridge.

Memorials may be directed in his memory to The Gideons International or the Thorntown Christian Church.
