Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent crashes.

• At 6:02 p.m. on Saturday, Deputy Josh Clark was called to a single-vehicle accident on County Road 1400 North in Russell Township. He arrived to find a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox sitting in a bean field with no one around.

The vehicle had apparently been southbound on Montgomery County Road 475 West approaching the Putnam County Line. At the point where the road makes a 90-degree left turn and becomes Putnam County Road 1400 North, the vehicle left the road and entered the bean field.

Although no one was at the scene, the owner of the vehicle is Daniel J. Blanton Jr. of Waveland.

The vehicle was towed. Clark estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 2:51 a.m. on Thursday, Robert T. Hirt, 24, Fillmore, was eastbound on County Road 300 South in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu. Nicole Mershon, 25, Greencastle, was westbound in a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado.

Both drivers told Deputy Derek Tomaw that they were in their own lane, but as they met at the crest of a hill, the two vehicles collided. Tomaw noted that from his investigation, it appeared that both were near the center of the road at the point of collision.

Mershon had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance for injuries sustained to her face. Both Hirt and his passenger declined medical attention.

Both vehicles were towed. Tomaw estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 4:01 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22, Ethan W. Young, 17, Coatesville, was approaching a curve on Heritage Drive at 70 Patriots Landing in a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse when he lost control and left the road, hitting a tree and rolling onto its driver’s side.

Young told Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle that he had been traveling 10 mph over the posted 30-mph speed limit as he entered the curve, which caused him to lose control.

Rozelle observed 60 feet of skid marks crossing over the line, including those that indicated the vehicle was completely on the opposite side of the road at one point. The marks continued another 70 feet off the road until the car hit the tree and rolled.

Young and his passenger, another minor, were able to exit the vehicle due to the top being down on the convertible. With the authorization of their parents at the scene, both said they were not injured and declined to be checked out.

The vehicle was towed. Rozelle estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
