Tiger Cubs move over .500 with win over WIldcats

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs volleyball team powered through to win in straight sets 25-13,25-23, 25-17 over the visiting South Vermillion Wildcats Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action.

The Cubs started slow to begin the match as they had some early trouble with the Wildcat service game and fell behind early 6-3.

Meilani York provided a spark once she got behind the service line. Greencastle scored 11 consecutive points, including three service aces from York and all of a sudden, they were up by eight.

The hosts would make another run late in the opening set, scoring the final seven, including a big block from Makenzie Creviston and kill from Keely Amis to close out the set.

Both teams struggled for consistency in the second set. The Wildcats scratched and clawed their way to a slim two-point lead at 22-20 and seemed poised to finish off the Cubs.

Kills from Amis, Creviston and Kylee Owens, with an ace from Allie Landry, brought Greencastle back from the brink to take the second set 25-23.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game; we were a little off on our attack tonight, but we found a way,” Tiger Cubs coach Denise Meyer said. “South Vermillion is a scrappy team. I told them to expect balls to come back and be ready.”

Once again, a slow start had the final set close, until another big stretch broke it loose.

Amis continued hitting from the left side with confidence. Maddie Plew added a stuff block and the Cubs took control from there, not letting the Wildcats get any momentum going and completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
