PIC OF THE DAY: Train Kept A-Rollin'

Friday, September 1, 2023
With the progress of the Greencastle bicentennial mural barrelling down the line, artist Damien Mitchell does detail work on a Monon streamlined diesel engine that occupies the south portion of the Dick’s Barber Shop wall. Several more details are certain to have emerged by the time crowds arrive downtown Friday evening for September First Friday and the Green Light Art Festival.

  • Just my mind wondering, but is there significance of the "84A" number plate on the train?

  • Looks like 84A was the model or class of the engine.

  • 84A was the "Road Number". Each engine had a unique RN to identify the engine. 84A went into service in 1947. It was a model F3 (1,500hp) manufactured by General Motor's Electro-Motive Division (serial number 4459). It was retired in 1970 and traded back to EMD, likely for a newer model.
