Stephens gets first win as balanced Greencastle attack sinks West Vigo

Friday, September 1, 2023

Sometimes in football you cannot go by stats and time of possession, as was the case Friday night as Greencastle got coach Dave Stephens his first win.

Four touchdown passes from Cole Stephens and two scores apiece for Lamar Moore, Brendle Brennan and Anthony Adams led the Tiger Cubs to a 56-18 victory over the visiting West Vigo Vikings.

Greencastle started slow on offense, adjusting to the Vikings dropping into coverage. West Vigo on offense brought out the grinding Wing-T offense and controlled the clock early.

The Tiger Cubs adjusted and went to the ground with Moore carrying six times on the drive and taking one in from 17 yards out for the game’s first score. Ian Williamson added the extra point to make it 7-0.

The Vikings got on the board on the first drive of the second quarter behind the legs of Jacob Dewey and Connor Wallace. Dewey plunged in from three yards out for the visitors’ first score. The two-point conversion attempt failed though as the Cubs still led 7-6.

The scoring opened up for Greencastle. A couple of big runs for backup running back Adams set up Moore for a four-yard score. On the very next play Parker Welker pounced on a fumble in the end zone for another score.

After a long drive from West Vigo that stalled in the redzone, the Cubs went to the air to get another score before halftime.

Owen Huff was the beneficiary this time, grabbing three catches on the drive, including a 28-yard strike with just six seconds left in the half, and Greencastle was up 28-6 at the break.

The Vikings seemed to be in business to start the second half, recovering a pooch kick, and had the ball deep in Tiger Cub territory.

The opportunistic Cubs jumped on a fumble and wasted little time taking advantage. A big run from Moore and a 15-yard penalty on the Vikings set the stage as Stephens dropped back and found Brennan behind the defense for a 16-yard score.

After a West Vigo score cut the deficit, the quick-strike Cubs did it again. Stephens found Brennan again all alone from 56 yards out to put Greencastle back up by 30.

Adams would do some more damage on the ground on the next possession on two carries, rushing for 55 yards and another Greencastle touchdown in just 27 seconds.

Adams was not done as on the next drive, he caught a swing pass and raced 44 yards for another score.

West Vigo would add a late score as time was expiring to make it the final 56-18.

“Feels good to get that first win. (West Vigo) gave us a different look to start, but after about a drive and half we got things rolling,” Greencastle coach Dave Stephens said about the Tiger Cubs’ first win of the season.

The win now sets up a big week next week as they will make the short trip to South Putnam to face the undefeated Eagles,

“It’s a circle game. South has been the standard in the county and (Eagle head coach Chuck) Sorrell will give us some different looks,” added coach Stephens.
