Who and What Do You See?

Wednesday, September 6, 2023
The talk of downtown Greencastle for more than a week now, the Greencastle bicentennial mural on the side of Dick's Barber Shop looks to be near completion Wednesday morning, even before the arrival of artist Damien Mitchell. While consensus seems to have developed over the subjects of the mural, no definitive word has come from the artists or the Putnam County Mural Project committee. Who and what do you see on the mural?

  • This is the very best mural in Greencastle!

  • Hopefully the Banner will do a story on who is in this mural. The younger generation will have no idea who most of these individuals and places are.

  • Edith Browning, the Chewing Gum Lady next to the train.

  • Edith Browning is the lady from the right, also known as "the chewing gum lady". She was the first ever-female bank officer in Putnam County and was employed at the Central National Bank. I believe Edith Browning was the bank teller when John Dillinger and his gang robbed the Central National Bank.

  • Correction: Edith Browning is the lady on the left of mural.

  • The Chewing Gum Lady gave all children and some adult Juicy Fruit gum when they came to the bank.

  • I received a stick of juicy fruit from Ms. Browning in a card when I graduated from college. After she retired from CNB she continued to distribute gum at church to all the kids in Sunday school each week.

Col. Eli Lilly operated a drug store in Greencastle before he started what is now the largest pharmaceutical company in the world.

  • I had the privilege of interviewing Edith Browning in 1983 for a story on the 50th anniversary of the Dillinger robbery. Ms. Browning was with a customer at a desk on the bank's nezzanine when the gang entered. When she peered over the railing and saw what was happening she returned to the desk and told her customer that they must "look busy" in the event one of the gang came up the stairs. None did. The robbery was over in a matter of minutes. Ms. Browning was a very gracious lady.

  • What a great lady Mrs. Browning was! The mural is amazingly beautiful.

  • One thing I was amazed with was how the front bicycle appears to be projecting out of the mural. A great optical illusion perfectly presented. Great addition to Dick's barbershop wall!
