Cadets run over Clovers again

Friday, September 8, 2023

CLAYTON — With the Cloverdale football team on a two-game win streak, the Clovers came into Cascade with some confidence.

The Cadets stuck to what worked a year ago, controlling both lines of scrimmage, and rushed for 447 yards while holding Cloverdale to under 50 yards of offense en route to a 68-0 non-conference victory over the Clovers.

Cascade’s defense set the tone early by forcing a three and out. It then took the Cadet offense just three plays to score.

Toby Savini took a handoff, cut back and dashed 39 yards for the game’s first score. The hosts scored their second when Damien Appleby took the ball in from 13 yards out. They would add one more in the opening quarter as Savini was off to the races on a 63-yard scamper to make it 20-0.

On Cascade’s next possession, it took just one play to score again. After a short punt, quarterback Brady Trebley found Trent Austin for a 28-yard score. Following a Clover fumble, Trebley hit Savini out of the backfield for an 11-yard score and the rout was on.

The Clovers got a little something going when backup quarterback Artrevion Henderson hit Tyson Bridges for a first down. Henderson was forced into action when Tayt Jackson went out with an injury. Levi Johnson powered forward for 10 yards but the threat was denied when the Cadets picked off Henderson.

Cascade wasted little time scoring again. After an incompletion, Appleby broke off a 71-yard run with eight minutes still remaining in the half.

The hosts would add three more scores before the half, one each from Caiden Clements, Appleby and Dayton Mink made it 62-0. The running clock would start the second half.

An outage in one of the light standards brought about a delay in the second half though there was no scoring in the third quarter.

Cascade got one more score in the fourth as Tyler Hege scored from two yards out for the game’s final points.

“We knew coming in the lines were going to be physical and cause us problems,” Clover coach Tyler Lotz said.

Cloverdale’s record evens up at 2-2 on the season and gets ready for county and conference foe North Putnam next week.
