One-way northbound traffic to shift on Bloomington Street
Northbound travelers through Greencastle will find a shift in traffic on U.S. 231/Bloomington Street beginning on or after Monday, Sept. 18.
The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced that traffic will remain northbound only between State Road 240/Veterans Highway and Washington Street, but the traffic pattern will shift into the northbound lanes in connection to the ongoing major pavement improvement project.
This next phase (Phase 1B) will address the work on the southbound half of Bloomington Street, with traffic being shifted into the northbound lanes on the east side of the road.
Traffic will still be one way, northbound only.
Crews will be resurfacing and reconstructing the pavement, performing curb work and constructing sidewalks. This phase is expected to last through the end of 2023, weather permitting.
The official detour follows State Road 240 to State Road 75 to U.S. 36 and back.
In addition to the traffic shift, starting on or after Monday, Oct. 2, the southbound lane of U.S. 231 will be restricted between Frazier St. and Elizabeth St. on the city’s north side.
The northbound lane will be down to 10 feet wide. This will allow crews to safely perform pavement reconstruction work and make sewer improvements.
This restriction is expected to last through mid-November, weather permitting. Prior to the lane restriction, utility work will also be under way in the area. INDOT urges motorists to expect traffic delays during this time.
This project includes four phases, and will involve both lane restrictions and closures. The project limits are on U.S. 231, between State Road 240/Veterans Highway and Frazier Street. Work includes milling, curb replacement, curb ramp reconstruction and full-depth pavement replacement work.
One-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project, with the exception of the closures. INDOT will hold public information meetings before work starts on U.S. 231 in each construction season.
INDOT reminds motorists to slow down, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.
