Tiger Cubs air raid Golden Arrows

Friday, September 15, 2023

There was no letdown from Greencastle coming off a big win last week.

Cole Stephens threw for 311 yards and six touchdowns while the Tiger Cub defense did its part, creating two turnovers and allowing just over 200 yards of offense to Sullivan as the hosts rolled to a 49-21 victory over the Golden Arrows at Harbison Stadium Friday night.

The Sullivan defense was trying to contain the high-powered Cubs offense. Greencastle had to march its way down the field early, using a 10-play drive finished off by Lamar Moore from one yard out to put the hosts up a score.

With the Arrows deep in their own territory after a great kick from Ian Williamson, the Cubs forced third-and-10. Blake Fraker found Peyton Carlson, who made a tremendous one-handed catch between two Cub defenders, then broke free for a 79-yard touchdown. The play would make up over a third of the Arrow offense for the game.

Greencastle would strike again. Following a defensive stand to pin the Arrows deep and force a punt, Owen Huff had a nice return to set the Tiger Cubs up at the Arrow 28. On the next snap, Stephens threw his first touchdown of the game to Brendle Brennan. Williamson added the point after to give the Cubs the lead for good at 14-7.

A fumble on the kickoff was recovered by Garrett Cooper and Greencastle was in business again. It took three plays this time as Stephens found Williamson all alone for a 24-yard score and just like that it was 21-7

The host defense continued to play well, winning the field position battle while the Cubs’ offense just kept scoring.

Stephens this time hit Huff on an 18-yard strike to make it 28-7 early in the second. Huff then would intercept a pass from Fraker to set up the next score.

On play action, Stephens had Brayden Monroe all alone and the rout was on. Greencastle would add one more score as Stephens hit Williamson for the second time, this time a 33-yard touchdown. The Arrows added a late score to make it 42-14 at the half.

Greencastle got a big turnover, with the help of a fortuitous bounce off the umpire, as Parker Welker picked off a Fraker pass.

Williamson capped off the ensuing drive on a 10-yard pass from Stephens for his third score of the game. With the extra point the running clock kicked into effect.

Sullivan added one more score in the fourth quarter when freshman quarterback Paul Ridgway sneaked it in from two yards out, but too little too late for the Arrows.

“I really feel it was a statement win for our program. We could have had a million excuses, an emotional letdown after South Putnam. Our guys came out focused and our coaches coached their behinds off this week,” Greencastle coach Dave Stephens said.

It was a brilliant performance from quarterback Cole Stephens, who threw for 311 yards and six touchdowns. Huff had nine catches on the night and Williamson had three scores receiving on a tremendous evening for Greencastle.

“I am proud of the turnout from the community. It was nice to put on a show for our fans,” added coach Stephens. “Can we handle our business now? That is our next challenge. Can we sustain success and be hungry every day?”

Greencastle is now 3-2 on the season and gets ready for a couple of road games at Brown County and Cloverdale.
