Democrats tout slate of city candidates

Joe Mackey, the Indiana 4th Congressional District Democratic chairman, recently announced the slate of Democratic candidates for Greencastle’s upcoming municipal election.

“I’m proud to introduce our robust lineup of candidates for Greencastle,” Mackey said. “The slate brings together leaders of varied backgrounds, unified by their values and their commitment to community growth and advancement. These community members have a wealth of knowledge and experience, have performed countless hours of community service, and are visible and accessible throughout Greencastle. They represent the very best of Greencastle’s values.”

Mackey had high praise for Gary Lemon and Kim Fidler, the two Democrats seeking at-large City Council positions.

“Gary Lemon brings a track record of fiscal responsibility with service on the City Council and the Redevelopment Commission,” Mackey said. “On the Putnam County Community Foundation’s investment committee, and his work on the Friends of the Park, he has proven his ability to manage money at-scale.

“Kim Fidler has served throughout Putnam County as a volunteer and has a lengthy list of contributions that have improved communities across Indiana,” Mackey said. “She is a strong advocate for public schools and has worked with members of the Indiana General Assembly, demonstrating her ability to work across the aisle and to bring bold solutions for our city.”

Mackey also spoke about the history of Democrats that have served in the mayor’s office.

“Greencastle is where it is because of the service of Democrats in this position,” he said. “Brian Cox, our choice for mayor, brings a wealth of knowledge from his work with the Chamber of Commerce, the Greencastle School Board and on the Redevelopment Commission. He will continue the history of successful leadership in Greencastle.”

Russell Harvey, currently serving on the City Council, is running for re-election in the First Ward

“Russell is bringing new vitality to the city as the executive director of Main Street Greencastle and he has a proven record of community service, including serving on the Greencastle School Board,” Mackey said.

Veronica Pejril, Third Ward councilwoman, runs to retain her Third Ward seat.

“Veronica brings a voice of advocacy for underserved residents to the City Council,” Mackey opined. “Her steady temperament has contributed to sustained bipartisan governance in City Hall.”

Vincent Aguirre seeks the Fourth Ward seat on the Council. “Vincent’s experience and knowledge with technology has empowered businesses across Putnam County,” Mackey said. “Vince has served on boards including Economic Development, Main Street Greencastle, and as president of the 100+ Men Who Care. He will bring an entrepreneur’s fresh perspective to Council. He was inspired to run after starting a family in the 4th Ward and is ready to move Greencastle forward for other young families.

“These candidates bring experience, strong work ethics, and the willingness and ability to represent the people of Greencastle,” Mackey concluded. “They demonstrate the visibility, accessibility and accountability that should be expected from public servants.”
