Music on the Square will come alive over the lunch hour with the melodious sound of Eric Salazar’s Pereira 3D-printed clarinet at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

His informal program of playing and chatting on M2’s Lunch Box Music series is part of DePauw University’s Global Music Experience, the focus of which will be on Mexico this year.

Mexico is famous for generations of mariachi musicians, but there also is a wealth of classical music by Mexican composers. Juventino Rosas, for example, wrote a waltz that became so internationally famous that for many years it was misattributed to Johann Strauss II. This free 50-minute program will offer an introduction to Rosas and to Mexican composer María Grever, shining a spotlight on their most famous works.

In growing demand himself as a composer, soloist and storyteller, Salazar (a.k.a. The Clarinet Guy and former director of community engagement and artist services for Classical Music Indy) is not your stereotypical classical musician. Although classically trained, he writes music that is cinematic in style, merging electronic sounds with familiar sounding instruments.

As a storyteller, Salazar fills a vivid space between educating and entertaining. His goal for his audience is for them to come away from his performances feeling empowered toward what they truly dream of becoming and inspired to live life in pursuit of their own dreams.

This free Lunch Box Music concert, created especially for the listening pleasure of busy business owners, employees, parents or seniors, who might not be able to catch an evening performance at the Green Center, invites the audience to bring their own brown bag lunch to M2 and enjoy it with a menu of live music over their lunch hour. An optional hot lunch, which is available for $15 on a first-come, first-served basis from The Whisk, also is free to seniors over 65.

As seating is limited at Music on the Square, reservations are recommended. Reserve a seat through the Green Center’s online box office at dpugreencenter.eventbrite.com.
