Patriots rack up 415 yards on ground, Clovers commit six turnovers in loss

Friday, October 13, 2023

SPENCER — On a rainy night to close out the regular season, the Owen Valley Patriots hit the ground running for a total of 415 yards and took advantage of six Cloverdale turnovers to roll to a 53-14 win on Friday night.

Cloverdale came out of the blocks quickly. On the third play of the game, Artrevion Henderson found Tayt Jackson streaking down the middle of the field and hit him in stride for a 70-yard scoring strike. Jackson added the extra point to make it 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.

After a trade of fumbles, Owen Valley, on third-and-27 completed its only pass of the game as Elijah Anderson hit Calvin Dean behind the defense for a 53-yard touchdown pass to notch the game at 7-7.

On the Clovers’ next possession, the Patriot defense came up with a big play. With Cloverdale driving, Eli Collier picked off a Henderson pass and dashed 83 yards for a go-ahead score. The extra point failed to make it 13-7.

Just two plays later, Cloverdale exploded again. Jackson took the ball on a jet sweep and raced around the left side, sprinting 74 yards for a score still in the first quarter. Jackson added the point after to retake the lead 14-13.

The Patriot defense came up with another big play as Collier snagged his second interception of the night. Owen Valley went to the ground game and the power running of Kyvan Bandy; three rushes and 50 yards later, Bandy found paydirt to put Owen Valley ahead for good 19-14.

A little over a minute later Edward DuBois stepped in front of a pass and took it to the house for the Patriots’ second pick-six on the night.

The Patriots would add one more score before the half. A big 39-yard third down run by Anderson set up Bandy for his second score of the night, a 34-yard run, to make 32-14 at the half.

“We were really excited about the start. We got a couple of big plays and we were where we wanted to be. The turnovers hurt us. Tt is just (Henderson’s) second start at quarterback and there are growing pains,” Clover head coach Tyler Lotz said.

Things went downhill in the second half for Cloverdale. Owen Valley got the ball and scored quickly as Calvin Dean broke loose on a 39-yard counter play and Bandy finished off the drive on a direct snap nine-yard touchdown run to take control of the game.

After a Clover fumble, Dean broke free again and rumbled 32 yards for another score. Anderson broke loose on another scramble as the third quarter ended for the last score of the game as Owen Valley went on for the 53-14 victory.

On the positive side, the Clovers rushed for 120 yards, 74 of that from Jackson. Henderson threw for 133 yards and a score. The six total turnovers by Cloverdale were a big factor in the wet weather.

The Clovers have to regroup as they get set to face off with Riverton Parke on the road to start sectional play next week.
