DAR members clean up historic Marion Township cemetery
FILLMORE — Members of the Washburn Chapter of the DAR met at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion Township on Saturday, Oct. 7 for a general cemetery cleanup day.
Yucca was hacked, debris was removed and stones were cleaned.
This historic cemetery, located on County Road 525 East just south of 50 South, contains the tombstones of many early Putnam County citizens, including Revolutionary War patriot Julius Glazebrook, who served in Williams Company in Tucker’s Virginia Regiment. Glazebrook died in Putnam County on Sept. 14, 1847 at age 95.
DAR members in attendance took special care with this historic stone.
Other veterans buried at Mount Carmel include: John M. Bowman, Benjamin C. Brown, Harvey Clark, John W. Knight, W. H. Scott of the Civil War and Mexican War veteran Mashaek Fittzsimmones.
Any organization or individual that would like to sponsor wreaths for veterans for the National Wreaths Across America program on Dec. 16 is asked to visit the Washburn Chapter Wreaths Across American page at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/IN0139P.
Seven wreaths would decorate Mount Carmel’s veteran graves.
The NSDAR is a woman’s service organization that focuses on patriotism, education and historic preservation. Chapters across the nation celebrated its founding day of Oct. 11, 1890 by performing local service projects.
