FILLMORE — Members of the Washburn Chapter of the DAR met at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion Township on Saturday, Oct. 7 for a general cemetery cleanup day.

Yucca was hacked, debris was removed and stones were cleaned.

This historic cemetery, located on County Road 525 East just south of 50 South, contains the tombstones of many early Putnam County citizens, including Revolutionary War patriot Julius Glazebrook, who served in Williams Company in Tucker’s Virginia Regiment. Glazebrook died in Putnam County on Sept. 14, 1847 at age 95.

DAR members in attendance took special care with this historic stone.

Having cleaned up Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion Township, Washburn Chapter DAR members proudly display their work on the gravestone of Revolutionary War veteran Julius Glazebrooke. Those taking part in the work include (front, from left) Kim Ziner, Diana Brumfield, (back) Beverly Ross, Kathryn Dory, Betsy Cox, Chris Miller and Rachel Mohr.

Other veterans buried at Mount Carmel include: John M. Bowman, Benjamin C. Brown, Harvey Clark, John W. Knight, W. H. Scott of the Civil War and Mexican War veteran Mashaek Fittzsimmones.

Any organization or individual that would like to sponsor wreaths for veterans for the National Wreaths Across America program on Dec. 16 is asked to visit the Washburn Chapter Wreaths Across American page at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/IN0139P.

Seven wreaths would decorate Mount Carmel’s veteran graves.

  • Is 1947 the correct date of death for a revolutionary war veteran. Wouldn't 1847 be more plausible?
