Miller finishes 11th, qualifies for IHSAA Cross Country State Finals

BROWNSBURG — Greencastle sophomore Landon Miller went out fast Saturday morning and was rewarded with an 11th-place finish and a berth in the IHSAA Cross County State Finals at the Brownsburg Boys’ Regional Saturday morning.

Miller finished in 15:45, missing out on the top-10 spot by a second to Danville’s Jack Herald, but was the only non-upperclassmen in the top-20 in a loaded regional race won by Carmel’s Tony Provenzano in 15:12.

The No. 1 Greyhounds won the regional title with a crushing score of 34, 65 points ahead of the second-place host and no. 8-ranked Bulldogs. No. 2 Zionsville finished third on 113 points with No. 24 North Central (Ind.) fourth on 137 points and No. 21 Avon fifth on 184 points.

South Putnam finished 23rd overall with 530 points, ahead of fellow Terre Haute Sectional teams Terre Haute North (623) and Clay City (691). The Eagles were led by Keaton Chew (16:55), who finished 67th overall, and Gabe Feltner (17:10), who finished 87th overall. Evan Hinkle finished the race in 17:54 with Landon Chew crossing in 18:22, Noah Couch crossing in 19:56 and Emilio Gallegos closing his South Putnam career in 21:48.

North Putnam’s Jeremiah Miles (16:42) finished his Cougar career with a 53rd-place finish while teammate Elijah Harless finished in 17:55.

Charlie Menzel finished his Greencastle (17:15) career in 91st place with freshman Caleb Edwards running his first regional in 19:19.

In the girls’ race, Tiger Cub freshman Colleen Bossnack (20:13) was 18 seconds and four places off of the final individual qualifier spot, finishing 45th overall to lead the quartet of county runners in the Brownsburg Girls’ Regional race.

South Putnam’s Elise Kendall finished the race in 21:40 while teammate Stevie Keenan crossed the line in 23:21. Cloverdale’s Olivia Hemmerling finished not long after if 24:04.

No. 4 North Central (Ind.) won a close race against No. 6 Carmel 70-88 to win the team title with No. 12 Zionsville edging past hosts and No. 14-ranked Brownsburg 143-147 for third. No. 21 Harrison (West Lafayette) also won a close race for the fifth and final team spot at the state finals over No. 23 Brebeuf Jesuit 167-178.

Bishop Chatard’s Julia Score won the individual title with a time of 17:37, bettering second-place Jessica Hegedus of Avon by 38 seconds.

The IHSAA Cross Country State Finals will be held at the Laverne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute this coming Saturday with the boys’ race beginning at 12 p.m. and the girls’ race at 2:30 p.m.
