Honor Their Sacrifice

In a poignant moment during Central Elementary’s Veterans Day program on Friday, U.S. Air Force veteran James Leach salutes as a recording of “Taps” is played.

Beforehand, fifth-grader Stella Wilson plays an impromptu rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on her violin. While local veterans were recognized, students also sang patriotic songs. Veterans Day programming will continue in the community on Saturday, when the traditional 11th-month, 11th-day, 11th hour ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. at the Putnam County Courthouse. The Greencastle American Legion will also host a free Veterans Day dinner, open to all veterans, at 6 p.m. at the post at 1401 Indianapolis Rd.

  • If the young lady is playing The Star Spangled Banner, then why aren’t the other students standing up? Sure hope they are being taught to stand for that song and the flag!!
