With second-place finishes in two different categories, the Greencastle Middle School robotics team is moving on in the state competition.

During a Saturday, Nov. 18 competition at Sunnyside Middle School in Lafayette, the GMS Ti-Gears earned second place in the overall competition with a high mission score of 300, just five points short of the first-place team’s score of 305.

“Well, our students did it again,” Ti-Gears coach Amy Weliever said. “They are traveling to the next level of competition for Indiana First LEGO League.”

The Ti-Gears also received second-place honors in the Core Values category of competition. The Core Values of First LEGO League have been trademarked: “Gracious Professionalism” is a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community. “Coopertition” is demonstrated by teams showing that learning is more important than winning and that they can help others even as they compete.

With the overwhelming number of teams participating across the state this year IN FLL has added a semi-state level of competition, which is set for Sunday, Dec. 10 at the University of Southern Indiana. The GCSC school board recently approved the the overnight trip to Evansville.

This year’s team consists of eighth-graders Lian Montgomery and Joseph Maksl; seventh-graders Nathan Hale, Sam Welch, Abigail Novak, Adelaide Kirsch, Chiara Seaman and Julian Dowd; and sixth-graders Blake Hamblet and Hunter Gorrell. The Ti-Gears are sponsored by Amy and Brett Weliever.
