In a tradition that now stretches across three generations, members of the Gobert family and others gather for Turkey Bowl LV on a chilly Thanksgiving Day. What started in 1969 as Greencastle High School friends Michael Gobert, Fred Green, Richard Hall, Kirk Fredrick and Jeff Fontaine, among others, has become a South Side Thanksgiving Tradition, with Michael Gobert always in attendance, as well as brothers Terry and Shawn — youngsters at the time of the inaugural game. Known for a good warmup to the Thanksgiving meal, if not for ball security, this year’s renewal of the tradition featured an astounding 20 interceptions, 13 of them caught by the “young guys” team, which bested the “old guys.” Perhaps most importantly, the 21 players ranged in age from seven to 68, with Michael Gobert the oldest and his grandson the youngest.
