A 1968 Greencastle High School graduate is among the 2024 inductees into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jay Frye was a three-sport standout at Greencastle, being named All-Western Indiana Conference in football, basketball and baseball during his senior year in 1967-68.

He average 13.5 points and 8 assists per game on the 1967-68 basketball team that made it all the way to the Sweet 16. He was named All-Sectional, All-Regional and All-Semistate during that tournament run.

He was also a three-year starter in football and a four-year starter in baseball at GHS, where one highlight was pitching a 16-strikeout no-hitter as a sophomore.

Frye went on to DePauw University, where he earned three varsity letters in basketball and four in baseball. He was inducted into the DePauw Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

In addition to being named Most Competitive Player twice by DePauw and once by the Indiana Collegiate Conference, Frye earned all-conference honors while also being named the shortest starting guard (5’7”) in the nation both junior and senior years. In baseball he was a three-time all-conference player and was named to the first team at second base his junior and senior years. In 1972 he was named to Outstanding College Athletes of America, leading the ICC in batting average, slugging percentage, stolen bases and RBI.

After graduating from DePauw, he earned a post-graduate degree in physical therapy at Ohio State University, going into private practice in physical therapy and sports medicine in Fort Wayne. He was also physical therapist to the U.S. Sky Team in 1998.

Aside from other business interests, Frye was longtime owner of the Fort Wayne Fury of the former Continental Basketball Association.

Frye will become the fourth GHS grad inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, joining 1926 graduate Marion Crawley (inducted 1964), 1931 grad Tom Goldsberry (inducted 1984) and 1933 grad Jess McAnally (inducted 1972).

All told, Frye will be the 11th Putnam County high school graduate to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, a list that also includes:

Bainbridge (3): Archie Chadd (graduated 1924, inducted 1963), Jeff Blue (graduated 1960, inducted 1999), Larry Steele (graduated 1967, inducted 2003).
