In a final tune-up before the Putnam County Meet, Greencastle swam against fellow WIC competitor Edgewood Wednesday evening.

The Mustangs won both duals comfortably, beating the Tiger Sharks 110-64 in the boys’ meet and 131-39 in the girls’ meet, though Greencastle head coach Kent Menzel was pleased with several of the swims ahead Saturday.

“We really saw some great sprinting tonight,” Menzel said. “Our senior leaders, Meredith Ball and Avery Capps, were really lighting it up in both the 50 and 100 free distances. Kylie Flint was also on top of things.

“Zane Huber was also swimming super-fast tonight. We were working on some things to make him better and faster tonight; it’s working out quite well.”

The Tiger Sharks had four event wins on the night split between Ball and Huber.

Both swimmers won the 50 free with Ball winning in 28.86 and Huber in 24.99. Huber also won the 100 free in 55.40 while Ball won the 100 back in 1:15.41.

Second-place finishes on the night for the boys included Clay Glessner in the 50 free (26.05) and diving (142.70), Landon Miller in the 500 free (6:17.69), the 200 free relay team of Huber, Glessner, Sam Hanlon and Charlie Menzel (1:44.84) and the 400 free relay team of Menzel, Hanlon, Huber and Nolan Stonebreaker (4:11.18).

“The most exciting thing we saw tonight was Clay’s diving,” Menzel noted. “This was a breakthrough performance for him. He’s been working on some tough new dives and got them while also doing his normal dives with precision and I can’t wait to see what he’ll be able to do on Friday.

“Clay also did very well pulling double-duty with his swims in the 50 free. Landon swam very well in the 500 free tonight. The boys did some events they don’t normally swim but they had some great times tonight.”

Second-place finishers on the night for the girls included Avery Capps in the 200 IM (2:47.07) and 100 free (1:03.75) and the 200 free relay team of Ball, Capps, Taylor Ball and Kylie Flint (2:01.69).

“We’re looking forward to Saturday,” Menzel said about the county meet. “We are putting a lot of emphasis on our relays and we have some individual swims that we’re targeting for some greatness but we’ll see.

“There is some very good competition in the county right now with great teams swimming at South Putnam and North Putnam. We’ll be there for the fight and are definitely looking forward to it.”
