Clovers have good second half in loss to Eagles

CLOVERDALE – The Cloverdale girls’ basketball team got a combined 30 points from Emily Mann and Amalia Haga but could not overcome a 20-point halftime deficit, falling to the Brown County Eagles in WIC action 62-42 Friday night.

The Eagles came out shooting lights out. Lexie Austin drained three from beyond the arc and the visitors hit five of their first seven shots to jump out to a 13-4 lead.

Cloverdale made a little run late in the first when Haga scored and Mann hit a three to make it an eight-point game at the end of one.

Brown County started the second period much the way it did the first. With Austin on the bench with foul trouble, the Eagles turned to Anna Tipton, Ava Stogsdill and Maddie Huff to pick up the slack.

The three combined to score all of the team’s 18 points in the quarter while the Clovers did not score until 2:24 left in the quarter on a Mann free throw, adding a late three-point play from Gracie Lee, but the hosts were down 20 at the break.

Cloverdale came out with a different mindset in the second half and tried to battle back. The offense started clicking, but they would not be able to slow down the Eagles as Stogsdill was able to penetrate and get to the basket at will.

The Clovers outscored the Eagles 18-17 in the third to win the quarter but still trailed 52-33 at the last break.

Austin got back into the flow for the Eagles to start the final period, scoring six more points. Mann countered with a couple of baskets while Haga and Lee each had another late basket, but it would be to no avail as Cloverdale would fall 62-42.

“Our defense was terrible tonight. We didn’t get out on Austin and we let (Stogsdill) drive wherever she wanted to. It was our best offensive output of the season. You can’t give up 62 points, that’s what got us,” said Clover coach James Wade.

Mann would finish with a double-double of 17 points and 10 boards. Haga would also finish in double figures with 13 points and six boards of her own. The Eagles finished with three in double figures as Austin paced them with 21, Ava Stogsdill added 19 and Anna Tipton had 10.
