BRAZIL – After Brinlee Clarke led the destruction of Terre Haute North Tuesday night, outscoring the Braves singlehandedly 38-34, North Putnam opted to do whatever it could to keep the Northview junior under wraps.

The Cougars succeeded in that sense Friday night, holding Clarke to eight points, but the rest of the Knights rallied as the other four starters scored in double-figures, starting the night with a 24-10 lead after eight minutes on the way to a 58-32 win.

“Anytime you have a great player and that player scores 38 points, teams are going to see that and North Putnam did a good job of packing it in and making things difficult for (Clarke),” Northview head coach Zack Keyes said. “She was excellent tonight disturbing the basketball; the rest of our kids did what they are supposed to do and knocked down shots.”

“This is a tough stretch of us schedule-wise and Northview is such a good ball club,” North Putnam head coach Curtis Lawrence said. “Brinlee Clarke is such a good ball player and they have guards that can shoot.

“Our gameplan was to not let Clarke beat us and to give up the three-point shot early until they hit some. Sure enough, they hit some and that changed the game early on.”

North Putnam started off with a 4-0 lead after baskets from Jasmine Duvall and Lexi Daigle before Reagin White and Brenna Stallcop answered with consecutive threes.

Rose Haste tied the game at 6-6 off a steal but it would be all Northview from that point forward.

White hit a jumper and Rekelle Terrell scored off a steal to make it 10-6, followed by a 9-0 run after a Duvall basket as Clarke and Carlee Schrader put in three free throws while Stallcop and White added another three each.

Duvall hit a jumper but a White free throw and baskets from Schrader and Brooklyn Eldridge gave the hosts a 24-10 lead after a quarter of play.

Clarke scored baskets after connections by Stallcop and Schrader as part of an 8-0 run that saw the lead extended to 20 points at 32-12 before a scoring lull took hold.

Addi Osburn hit a three to break the run before the Knights scored the final five points of the half through Stallcop, Terrell and White to take a 37-15 lead into halftime.

Duvall scored to open the second half before Northview finished the game as a contest with a 21-2 run.

Clarke scored with a short hook, followed by a Schrader basket and back-to-back threes from Stallcop.

Terrell and Schrader scored off steals, the latter adding a basket and three-point play before Schrader scored the final points of the night for the Knights to make it 58-19.

“Defensively, we were really solid tonight,” Keyes said after the team recorded 19 steals on the night. “Offensively, that’s probably the best three quarters we’ve played this year as far as shot making goes and people being effective on the offensive end.

“We moved the ball extremely well and everyone really knocked down shots.”

North Putnam scored the remaining points, primarily though Jenna Day, who scored eight points across the final 10 minutes.

The hosts were shut out in the final quarter as the Cougars scored all 10 points in the final quarter but had already done more than enough to reach double-digit wins on the season.

“We didn’t quit, even when the game got out of hand,” Lawrence said about the good closing stretch. “Jenna had a great game for us and Melanie Davies did a good job on Clarke, so there’s always positives out of every game.

“We turn around, learn from this and see what we can do with Indian Creek (Saturday) night.”
