South Putnam swept the Putnam County Swim Meet titles for a second-straight year Saturday at DePauw’s Erdmann Natatorium as the Eagle girls won 281.5-128.5-103 over North and Greencastle while the boys won by a 266-175-153 margin over the Cougars and Tiger Sharks.

Kallie Pastore, Megan Bumgardner, Wyatt Kendall and Keaton Chew each had four event wins on the day to lead the charge for South Putnam, who was only shut out of wins in two events as North Putnam won both 200 free relay events while the Cougars and Greencastle split diving titles on Friday night.

“Every swimmer came in with high expectations for big swims and really fought to make that happen,” South Putnam head coach Anna Kendall said. “They’re seeing a lot of improvement and we’re really proud of not only their drive to continue to get better but also their support of one another throughout that process.

“I’m looking forward to seeing where that will take us this season.”

Pastore set a new county meet record in 100 breaststroke, beating her 2021 time with a new mark of 1:08.63. Pastore also won the 40 free (26.21) while Bumgardner won the 100 fly (1:07.96) and 100 back (1:07.86). Elise Kendall added a win in the 200 free (2:22.70).

Kendall, Pastore and Bumgardner were joined by Bella Fanning in winning the 200 medley relay (2:00.55) while the trio were joined by Josey Helton in winning the 400 free relay (4:08.10) to close the meet.

Wyatt Kendall won the 500 free (5:24.78) and 100 back (1:00.65) while Chew picked up wins in both the 50 free (24.28) and 100 free (54.12). Jonah Taylor added wins in the 200 IM (2:18.55) and 100 fly (1:00.13) while Brent Cunningham added a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.66) and Logan Johnson won the 200 free (2:01.91).

Kendall, Cunningham, Taylor and Chew combined to win the 200 medley relay (1:45.59) while Chew and Kendall were joined by Logan Johnson and Luke Hutcheson in winning the 400 free relay (3:43.27) to end the day.

Barbie Fuchs highlighted North Putnam’s day with three wins at the event, winning the diving competition Friday night before adding a win in the closest race of day, beating out South Putnam’s Elise Kendall by .03 seconds to win the 100 free (1:00.44). Addison Everman also claimed a win, picking up the title in the 500 free (6:44.73).

Fuchs also anchored the 200 free relay team with Everman, Graci Hollis and Addie Jones (1:53.16). The Cougars also won the boys’ 200 free relay (1:40.68) through Brody Braeger, Kolten Hoops, Brayden Chew and Michael Ali.

Greencastle picked up a pair of wins in the event as Clay Glessner won the boys’ diving title while Avery Capps won the girls’ 200 IM (2:39.42).

“We were anticipating some very fast swims from the Sharks today and they certainly delivered on the plan,” Greencastle head coach Kent Menzel said. “Our seniors led the way, including Avery Capps, who brought home a win in the 200 Individual Medley with a lifetime best effort, and exceeded her lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke as well.

“Meredith Ball, Zane Huber and Charlie Menzel also recorded lifetime or season best efforts today, all great signs for meets to come this season. Sophomores Landon Miller and Nolan Stonebraker met the lifetime best standard, as did freshmen Taylor Ball and Ella Tischer. Ella and Landon actually smashed their lifetime bests today, which is a solid base for entering holiday training.

“I was also very happy to see Clay Glessner bring home the win in diving,” Menzel added. “We are looking forward to a few more hard days of training and then some days off, before getting serious with our winter training.”

  • Congrats to all swimmers, and an extra congrats to the Cougar athletes! It's unfortunate there are no comments from their head coach, especially with 4 County wins.
