TERRE HAUTE – Both Putnam County teams took losses to open the First Financial Wabash Valley Classic Tuesday evening at Terre Haute South High School.

Taking part in the final two games of day one, Greencastle was down 20 after a quarter and fell to Terre Haute North 81-41 while Cloverdale led South Vermillion well into the second quarter before a 14-0 run handed the Wildcats a lead at halftime ahead of a 66-50 win.

A ruthlessly efficient Patriot squad shot 7-of-7 from inside the arc and 5-of-8 from outside it in the opening quarter to welcome the Tiger Cubs with a 29-point first quarter.

Terre Haute North junior Bryce Renn did much of the early damage as the 6’9” forward drained three of the team’s four triples to help build a 17-5 lead.

Braden Walters added six points, including a dunk that was assessed a technical foul for hanging on the rim, though later threes from Kavish Reddy and Brady Klopfenstein kept the onslaught going as the Patriots led 29-9 after eight minutes.

Greencastle steadied somewhat in the second quarter as Sam Gooch and Cody Evans had two baskets each while Nathan Sutherlin added a three but Kam Baker had two threes and Reddy added another as Terre Haute North extended the lead to 43-21 at halftime.

The Patriots started the second half with an 11-0 run behind seven points from Cameron Fennell and hit the 35-point plateau on a Gavin Woelfle three at 57-22, finishing the quarter with a 62-26 lead.

Despite the running clock, the pace never let up as the Tiger Cubs finally found some offensive consistency in the fourth quarter, knocking down all six shots from inside the arc in the period with Evans and Anthony Adams scoring twice each but Terre Haute North added three more threes in the closing minutes.

South Vermillion 66, Cloverdale 50

Short-handed due to an injury to Tayt Jackson, the Clovers fell behind 10-3 but rallied with a 10-0 run, were level at 15-15 with the Wildcats after a quarter and led 20-15 until the final three minutes of the half when South Vermillion scored the final 14 points to take a 29-20 lead it would never relinquish.

Dylan Conder scored twice inside threes from Aden Wallace and Parker Weir to take a 10-3 lead with Houston Jobe hitting a three in the middle of the Wildcat start.

Cloverdale answered with a 10-0 run, Zack Thomas scoring seven of those points, to take a 13-10 lead and finished tied at 15-15 after eight minutes of play.

Jobe hit a three and a jumper to start the second quarter to make it 20-15 Clovers before both teams began to struggle with turnovers and missed shots.

Once Luke Bush scored with 2:55 left until halftime, it was all South Vermillion as Dominic Garzolini scored five quick points to push the Wildcats in front while a late three-point play from Brayson Shoults made it 29-20 at halftime.

A back-and-forth start to the second half saw Thomas and Jobe hit threes while Trey Schabel, who got the start in place of Jackson, added a three-point play to make it 35-31, but each score was answered by South Vermillion.

A Garzolini three and an 8-2 run to finish the quarter with a pair of baskets each from Shoults and Weir gave the Wildcats a 49-35 lead after three quarters and though Jobe added 10 points in the final period, South Vermillion continued to answer at every turn to advance in the upper bracket of the Classic.
