Jim Baugh monument to be dedicated on 20th anniversary of deputy’s death

Thursday, December 28, 2023

Last spring, a small monument appeared on the south side of the Putnam County Courthouse with no fanfare.

On Tuesday the marker, which honors the late Capt. Jim Baugh, will be officially dedicated on the 20th anniversary of Baugh’s tragic death on Jan. 2, 2004.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, now helmed by Baugh’s son Jerrod, will host a 20-year memorial service and monument dedication at 4:30 p.m. on the south steps of the courthouse.

A 32-year veteran of the sheriff’s office at the time, Capt. Baugh lost his life in early 2004 while responding to an accident north of Greencastle on U.S. 231. The elder Baugh was a former two-term sheriff.

  • Totally remember that day....cannot believe it has been 20 years ago. Think about Jim and his wit a lot. We responded to a lot of incidents together and he was always light-hearted until he wasn't...could be VERY stern when pressed into it! (Ask the driver that ran through his commands while directing traffic one day...they got an EARFUL) Jim always was a dedicated servant to Putnam County and having Jerrod as sheriff just brings it full circle.

  • Jim was a great sheriff, I'll withhold judgement on his son for now.
