Cynthia A. Hackworthy, 83, of Spencer, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024 surrounded by her family at the IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

She was born in Janesville, Wis., on Feb. 1, 1940 to John and Helen “Upham” Scidmore.

Cindy married the love of her life, John Hackworthy, in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 5, 1964.

She graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis., and worked as a social worker in Chicago until starting her most rewarding career of raising her family.

She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Tri Kappa sorority and the Owen County IU Varsity Club. Cindy was an avid gardener, loved blue birds and was a loyal Cubs baseball fan, but loved spending time with her family most of all, especially her grandchildren.

Cindy is survived by husband John; her daughters, Susan (Tony) Williams of Martinsville, Deb (Todd) Zellers of Greencastle and Amy (Brian) Stephenson of Louisville, Ky.; grandchildren John Williams of Indianapolis, Joe Williams of Martinsville, Anna and Benjamin Zellers of Greencastle and Alex and Emily Paul of Louisville; and a sister, Susan (John) Stromberg of Lake Forrest, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harry Scidmore Jr.

Funeral services for Cindy will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home, 105 N. Montgomery St., Spencer. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 29 from 3-7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of the service at 1 p.m. Entombment will follow the service at Chamberville Cemetery in Spencer.

Memorial contributions may be made in Cindy’’s honor to the Owen County Humane Society or the Hackworthy Fund at the Owen County Community Foundation.
