NPHS, CHS JAG students thrive at conference
TERRE HAUTE — Students in the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) programs at Cloverdale and North Putnam took top honors at a recent conference in Terre Haute.
More than 200 students representing nine programs in JAG’s Region 7 in Indiana converged on the Ivy Tech campus for the annual Regional Career Development Conference. They participated in competitions to demonstrate the skills they have learned throughout the school year.
Individual events include Employability Skills, Career Presentations, Public Speaking, Creative Solutions and Outstanding Senior. There are also several group categories including Entrepreneurship and Project-Based Learning. Local employers and community leaders volunteered to serve as judges for the event.
In the individual results, North Putnam’s Mason Garriott placed first in Financial Literacy, while Cloverdale’s Sierra Kelley did so in Writing Skills. Second-place finishes went to North Putnam’s Gracie Camp in Career Presentation and Samantha Dorman in Financial Literacy, while North Putnam’s Tristan Million placed third in Financial Literacy.
In the group results, North Putnam took the top spots in Chapter Commercial and also Project-Based Learning with the team of Lexi Daigle, Sadie Mercurio and Layci Reed, while Cloverdale took Social Media Campaign. A second-place finish went to Cloverdale’s Amalia Haga, Olivia Hemmerling and Keelie Price in Project-Based Learning. Meanwhile, third-place finishes went to North Putnam in Chapter Brochure, Social Media Campaign and Entrepreneurship-Business Plan, the latter with the team of Nolan Augusta, Liam Sullivan and Elijah Lewis.
To top off the success, North Putnam’s Callee Riggle was also named the Outstanding Senior for Region 7.
Besides Cloverdale and North Putnam, Region 7 comprises programs at Northview, Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke, Sullivan, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and West Vigo. JAG programs at Greencastle and South Vermillion are to be added this year.
The conference was hosted by WorkOne. The Western Indiana Workforce Development Board sponsors the JAG programs.
The first-place winners in each competition will represent Region 7 at JAG’s state competition in March.
