Death Cafe meeting scheduled Feb. 19 at Almost Home

Thursday, February 1, 2024

A Death Cafe will be held at Almost Home in Greencastle on Monday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.

The event, which is free and open to adults 18 and older, is being organized by community member Kim Huffman and grief educator Jai Miranda.

The Death Cafe was first organized in 2011 in England by Jon Underwood and has gained popularity in the United States.

People, often strangers, will gather at a Death Cafe to eat, drink and discuss death. It is a group-directed discussion with no agenda, objective or theme, rather than a grief support or counseling session.

The goal of the Death Cafe is to increase awareness of death and normalize conversations around dying and loss.

“This gathering intends to provide a comfortable space for sharing respectful and thought-provoking insights on the topics of death, dying and grief,” Huffman said.

As a bereaved parent, Huffman seeks to help others navigate such discussions. Miranda offers individual counseling, support groups and education on dying in Putnam County.
