BAINBRIDGE — Firefighters from multiple departments were scrambled Thursday afternoon for a large fire that destroyed a shed in Bainbridge.

With a box alarm called at about 2:20 p.m. for a structure fire at 215 W. Pat Rady Way, the Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the single-story building as it was fully involved. The smoke rising could be seen from a wide distance.

The Roachdale, Clinton Township and Bellmore volunteer departments, as well as the Greencastle Fire Department, also arrived with manpower. Putnam County EMS and the Bainbridge Police Department were also at the scene.

With exposures being another large shed to the north of the structure and a home that was to the east, the location itself was a concern. Due to the size of the smoke column, it was initially feared that it was a commercial building.

With three handlines being deployed and water relayed from a nearby hydrant, Bainbridge Fire Chief Kevin Thorson said the defensive attack was to “surround and drown” after it was confirmed no one was inside.

Multiple vehicles were destroyed in the blaze. Ammunition was also inside the building but did not pose a threat to personnel. The flames reached about 30 feet high, as was evidenced by a scorched power pole.

The fire was relayed as under control by 2:55 p.m. Extensive overhaul of the concrete block and shingle construction was then carried out. Command of the scene was terminated by 4:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the response, while the other shed and the home were not damaged.

With the extent of the debris, Thorson said that a cause for the fire could not be determined.

According to Putnam County GIS, the property on which the shed stood is listed to James and Kathleen Fenwick.
