Monon Athletic Conference unveils name, logo

Thursday, February 22, 2024

The new athletics conference which Greencastle and North Putnam will join in the 2025-26 school year officially announced its name Thursday.

The Monon Athletic Conference will comprise itself of Greencastle, North Putnam, Crawfordsville, North Montgomery, Southmont, Frankfort, Western Boone and Cascade.

The newly-named conference explained why it chose the moniker in a press release:

On February 22, 2024, the executive committee, consisting of Principals and Athletic Directors of the eight (8) founding member school; Crawfordsville High School, Cascade High School, Frankfort High School, Greencastle High School, North Montgomery High School, North Putnam High School, Southmont High School and Western Boone Jr.-Sr. High School unanimously voted to adopt a conference constitution, name and logo. The name of the new athletic conference is the Monon Athletic Conference (MAC).

The name “Monon” was selected as a symbol of history and connection. The eight (8) founding schools sit directly along or within the old Monon Railroad corridor that connected Chicago to Indianapolis and Louisville for nearly a century.

  • How is Cloverdale and South Putnam not trying to join this conference? They would both be much more competitive in this conference compared to the WIC. With the exception of South in football and Cloverdale in Basketball in some years they have not been competitive in the WIC in most sports. I think personally that Cloverdale needs a change of scenery they have a hard time competing with the edgewood, owen valley, sullivan indian creek and northview in the WIC.

  • hmmm. Interesting. They would be the 2 smallest schools in this conference also. Maybe a totally different approach needs to be considered.

  • I love the new name. To answer the question from Putnam County Fan, Cloverdale and South Putnam, as smaller schools, might be a better fit for the Wabash River Conference, that comprises Parke Heritage, Riverton Parke, North and South Vermillion, and a few others. They are all 1A and 2A schools. The Monon is almost entirely 3A and larger 2A schools. So glad Greencastle and NP got out of the WIC. The travel was getting ridiculous.
