Sondra Dane (Whitaker) Burris, 85, of Mount Meridian, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024 at home surrounded by her family.

Born Feb. 12, 1939 in Mount Meridian, she was the daughter of Dewayne and Elizabeth (Morlan) Whitaker.

Sondra and Crawford “Crow” Burris met when she was six years old, and she married her soulmate, Crow, on June 9, 1956. They were married for almost 68 years.

Sondra led a full life sharing many experiences and creating lifelong memories with her husband and family. Sondra enjoyed spending time at their creek, doing flower gardens, mushroom and ginseng hunting, fishing, archery, watching birds and hummingbirds and relaxing outdoors. They enjoyed many trips together traveling on motorcycle, vehicle or airplane to all 50 states. Other activities included doing puzzles and playing scrabble, watching Dr. Pol, NASCAR races, the Colts, IU and PU basketball games and having their home serve as the center for many years of family gatherings.

Known to many as “Son” and to family as “Granny,” her faith, strong will and love of family helped her survive a kidney transplant and battles with cancer. Sondra’s love for all of her family and her ability to see only the good in people will live on through the people that she has touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Sue Jones and Nancy White; and grandchild Erica Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Crawford; a son, Bruce Burris of Brazil; a daughter, Pam Miller and husband Greg of Sullivan; a son, Brad Burris and wife Linda of Poland; a daughter, Jo Rains and husband Allan of Greencastle; a sister, Betty Shoemaker of Greencastle; a brother, Ted Whitaker of Brazil; a sister, Robin Reckerd of Plainfield; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers being sent to family, please make donations to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
