PCSO urges drivers not to drive distracted

Wednesday, April 10, 2024

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to focus on the road and avoid distractions while driving.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a national enforcement effort this month to deter distracted driving.

Law enforcement officers nationwide will work together to enforce texting and distracted driving laws. Drivers will see increased efforts as officers will be stopping and ticketing anyone who is caught texting and driving.

“Distractions behind the wheel can have devastating consequences,” said Devon McDonald, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “We urge all motorists to focus on the road and avoid any activity that takes their attention away from driving safely.”

Violators of Indiana’s hands-free law could face a Class C infraction with fines of up to $500, and also have points added to their license.

  • Deputies wouldn’t need to spend more than about 10 minutes looking for someone breaking this law. It’d be like shooting fish in a barrel.

  • Yesterday, while driving by Dari-Castle, a lady pulled out in front of me turning left in the cross lane. I slammed on my brakes and had to swerve onto the curb by the liquor store. She could have caused a bad accident. However, the worst part is that she was trying to eat her ice cream and drive at the same time. When I got behind her, I started honking my horn, and she was waving her hand like it was funny. I can describe the car, what she looked like and eventually I will find her somewhere. Unfortunately, I couldn't see what flavor of ice cream she was eating. SERIOUSLY, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT I did call the police department and report it.

  • I agree with koios. They won't do anything about it. See people all the time texting and driving.
