A Winter Wonderland
The one downside to being a music critic -- at least the only one I've found -- comes each year about this time. It's around the first of December that I have a debate within myself I never can quite settle.
I awoke Saturday shortly after 6 a.m. to a couple inches of snow and Christmas music on WREB. And just like that, I was in the mood for Christmas music.
But therein lies the problem for me. This is the time of year for making end-of-year lists. December is really a time I should be giving my favorites another listen and spinning some albums I missed in the first place.
I'll never claim my end-of-year lists are definitive. How can they be? I'm one person, and I certainly have my own musical prejudices. However, I do take seriously giving all the albums I can hear a fair shake and serious consideration. For that reason, I spend some late nights in December listening to different albums and putting serious thought into something pretty trivial.
That, however, is where it butts heads with my love of Christmas music. I have people in my family who would like to begin playing Christmas music shortly after Halloween. While I can't be on board with that, I do get in the mood about this time of year.
There are too many good things not to get started right now: the Ronnettes' version of "Sleigh Ride," any Christmas song by Elvis, "Run Rudolph Run" by Chuck Berry, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby, Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," "Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives and pretty much any version of "O Holy Night" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
That's really just the beginning. The point is, I have a lot of ground to cover in the next three weeks. It's important that I hear all the required listening or it might ruin the holiday.
So right now, I'm doing exactly what needs to be done -- I'm introducing my little one to the best music the Christmas season has to offer. So far, he really seems to like Bruce Springsteen and Run DMC. "Little Drummer Boy" made him cry, and I've never really like that song either.
That kid has really good taste.
And nothing feels better than falling asleep on the couch to Elvis crooning a Christmas tune while the baby in my arms also drifts off to sleep.
Now, if you'll excuse us, it's time for the Jernagan men to take a Saturday morning nap. It's cold outside, but it's warm in our living room.
