Great changes are coming to the Putnam County Public Library. The library has selected Polaris, the next generation of system automation, which provides access to the library catalog in a familiar Windows interface.
In 1998, the library changed from a paper card catalog and manual circulation system to an automated system -- Dynix Classic. Since then new products have been developed, such as Polaris, to make catalog searches easier for the public and staff functions more efficient. During the next few weeks the library will introduce the most sophisticated information system available in the library marketplace.
When the system upgrade is complete by Wednesday, May 3, patrons will see an immediate improvement in the services the library is able to offer, both at the library and on-line through its website. The public will see better content in the catalog including pictures of book jackets, direct links to book reviews, author notes, series notes and more powerful and effective search tools. Bestseller lists and lists of new titles are easily displayed. Patrons can keep track of their own reading histories, if they choose to do so. Access to personal accounts will still be available on-line.
Eventually, notices for reserved items ready for pick-up or for overdue materials can bPolaris new star at Putnam librarye sent via e-mail, saving postage costs.
