Senior Eric Davis scorched the course, shooting a medalist-worthy 37 for GHS. Nick Pritchard shot a 40, Jacob Collins shot 41 and Luke Crimmins and Wade Huber came in with 43's. Freshman Jim Wheeler shot a 48.
"Eric's round was phenomenal today," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler said. " He used the windy conditions to his advantage and played within himself rather than throwing away good scoring opportunities by trying to make heroic shots. He was patient and conservative and he allowed the doors to open on their own rather than trying to force his way through. In these conditions, that was a leadership-level round."
In addition to his pleasure over his medalist winner, Wheeler was also impressed with the low rounds of Pritchard and Collins.
"I'm also happy with the efforts of Nick and Jacob. We've been going through multi-day qualifiers, and they've been consistent all week," Wheeler said. "The biggest difference with both of them compared to last year is that they seem more relaxed. Especially Jacob. Last year he was micro-analyizing his technique after every swing and wasn't paying any attention to his score.
"This year, he plays with what he's got and he seems to just be enjoying himself," he added.
Although the Tiger Cubs put together a solid performance on Friday, Wheeler still sees room for improvement. He noted that in last Saturday's Northview Invitational his squad gave away most of their shots on the greens. Against the Viking he asked them to shoot short of the greens and not take the bait on what he referred to as "sucker-pins".
"They managed the course well, and came somewhat close in terms of execution," Wheeler commented.
