HUNTINGBURG -- Following South Putnam's victory in last week's Tri-West Softball Sectional, the Eagles will return to action today at the Forest Park Regional, where they will battle with three other teams for a berth in next weekend's IHSAA State Finals in Indianapolis.
South Putnam advanced to the regional by defeating Speedway 12-2 in six innings in Monday's Tri-West Sectional final; however, the game of the tournament came in the semifinals, where they edged North Putnam 2-1 in a 13-inning marathon. The Eagles opened the tournament with a 20-0 five-inning win over Monrovia.
The Rebels advanced through the Forest Park Sectional, and will therefore be playing in familiar territory. They defeated hosts Forest Park 2-0 in the opening round. In the semifinals, they defeated North Posey 3-2. In the finals, South Spencer downed Evansville Mater Dei 4-1.
In game two, Bloomfield (14-5) will play Brownstown Central (16-9) at approximately 1 p.m.
The Bloomfield Cardinals advanced through the South Knox Sectional, where they defeated Eastern Greene 6-1 in the semifinals. The Cardinals downed South Knox 4-2 in the sectional final.
The Brownstown Central Lady Braves were the winners of the Clarksville Sectional, where they defeated the hosts 3-2 in the opening round. In the semifinals, the Lady Braves won a 1-0, eight-inning affair with No. 6 Eastern Pekin. In the finals, they beat Brownstown Central 6-0.
The winner of game one will take on the winner of game two at 7 p.m., with the game two winner as the home team.
Once crowned, the winner will be on to next weekend's IHSAA State Finals. The class 2A semifinals will take place Friday, June 6 at North Central High School, with all four state finals games occurring at Ben Davis High School on Saturday.
Today's Forest Park Regional will be hosted at Cedar Crest Intermediate School, 4770 South S.R. 162, Huntingburg.
