Rock solid defense was the name of the game during the first half of the Greencastle High School boys' soccer match against Danville Thursday night at Dee Monnett field. After the first half of play there was no score. But by the end of the game, The Tiger Cubs had suffered their first loss in four games this season.
After 6:71 of play in the second half, a Greencastle foul deep in their own territory, allowed Danville's Tyler Blankenship to score on a direct free kick.
But the Tiger Cubs fought back from behind, as they did in their last two games, keeping constant pressure on the Warrior's back line. It paid off as Greencastle's Mitchell Ball, assisted by Greg Lilly; tied the score at 1-1, with 18:25 left to play.
For the next twelve minutes, each team fought hard to gain the lead. Danville's keeper made terrific saves, denying the Tiger Cubs several goals. After Blankenship put the Warriors on top again, they were able to hold off the Tiger Cubs for the rest of the game. Final score: Danville 2, Greencastle 1.
The Tiger Cubs were 3-0 going into this game, which left them with their first loss. The JV squad also lost 1-0 in one half of play.
"They (Danville) came out really with a lot of intensity, but I thought once we got past that initial ten minutes things settled down and we controlled play," GHS head coach Dave Lilly said. "Unfortunately they scored first and sometimes in this game the team that scores first is the team that ends up prevailing. We played from behind the last two games though. I think we had the momentum but not enough time to come back tonight. I felt the teams were very evenly matched but this was just one of those nights the ball didn't bounce our way."
