Tiger Cub soccer blanks Golden Arrows

Monday, September 22, 2008

The Greencastle boys' soccer team picked up its ninth win of the season Saturday at Dee Monnett Field, defeating Sullivan 2-0 with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes.

The Tiger Cubs dominated play throughout the match, but scoring proved to be difficult for Greencastle as the Sullivan packed tightly in their defensive end. The Tiger Cubs kept the ball in front of the Sullivan goal for the first forty minutes, however the Golden Arrows were able to weather the storm to keep the game scoreless at the break.

"We were confident that we could out possess them and knew they would sit back and make it hard for us to score. We were not able to draw them out to gain much space to make runs into. We really lacked intensity in the first half of play," GHS coach Dave Lilly said.

Play certainly stayed near the Golden Arrow goal, though, as Tiger Cub keeper Ryan Payne did not record a save in the period. Greencastle had 10 shots in the first half.

The Tiger Cubs again dominated play from the start of the second half, but couldn't find a way to score despite several good-looking opportunities. With 9:06 to play in the match, Josh Bonebrake was fouled inside the Sullivan penalty area, earning a penalty kick for Greencastle. Greg Lilly stepped up and fired the free kick past Sullivan keeper Nick Schlatter to finally put the Tiger Cubs ahead 1-0.

Four minutes later with 5:06 to play, Cody Watson served a ball into the Sullivan goal area and Bonebrake was able to head it in to extend the Tiger Cub lead to 2-0.

Sullivan had one shot on goal in the second half, which was stopped by Kyle Parker.

Greencastle (9-2) will travel to Edgewood Tuesday to take on the Mustangs. The varsity match will be played first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the JV game.
