Monday, October 6, 2008

JACKSON, Miss. -- Host and 13th-ranked Millsaps totaled 590 yards and rolled to a 55-13 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over DePauw Saturday afternoon. The Tigers dropped to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC, while the Majors improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Millsaps took an early 7-0 lead on its first series after Nick Namias scored on a 1-yard run with 9:47 left in the first which capped an 80-yard drive.

Juan Joseph's 46-yard run early in the second made it 14-0 with 14:05 remaining in the half, but the Tigers closed the gap to 14-7 less than two minutes later when Spud Dick team with Alex Koors on a 67-yard pass play.

The Majors answered that score, however, as Joseph scored on a 7-yard run to make it 21-7 with 9:44 left in the half.

Later in the half, the Tigers stopped a Millsaps drive when Stacy Crawford intercepted Joseph's pass in the end zone. On the next play, the Majors' Marcus Harris picked off Dick's pass at the Millsaps 47.

Five players later, Joseph teamed with Michael Galatas on a 52-yard scoring pass. The Majors made it 35-7 with eight seconds left in the half as backup quarterback Burt Pereira tossed a 7-yard scoring pass to Tye Menist.

Through the first half, Millsaps totaled 456 yards, 23 first downs and Joseph completed 20 of 28 passes for 242 yards.

Millsaps tacked on three touchdowns over a 2:43 stretch which bridged the third and fourth quarters before the Tigers rounded out the scoring on Mitchell Willsey's 1-yard run on the game's final play.

The Majors outgained DePauw 590-269 which included a 202-125 edge on the ground. Chris Collins paced the Tigers with 50 rushing yards, while Shane Bowser had 77 for Millsaps and Joseph added 65.

The Majors' Mason Burrell scooped it up at the Tigers' 20 and ran it in for Millsaps' final score.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, October 11, when it hosts Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. in the Tigers' 102nd annual Old Gold Day game.
