Local resident realizes goal with new gift shop

Monday, December 1, 2008

Debby Pierce stands in her newly-opened shop, Crafters 2 Gifts, which opened Nov. 18 at 830 Indianapolis Rd.
Greencastle resident Debby Pierce always wanted to own her own shop and now she has done just that. Pierce opened Crafters 2 Gifts Nov. 18 in the log cabin where Hoffman's Gifts once stood.

After working at Tractor Supply (TSC) for over 20 years, Pierce retired last year. She had been creating craft items for years, even building an addition to her garage to hold her crafts.

"There wasn't much traffic flow so when this property became available I jumped at the chance to buy it," explained Pierce.

She has made some changes and plans to add gutters and a new front window to the log cabin which provides a perfect setting for arts and crafts.

"This is a place for all seasons and reasons," said Pierce, who comes from a family of creative people. One of her favorite areas in the new shop is an upstairs alcove that features antique chairs collected by her grandmother and refinished and upholstered by her grandfather. The space also shows off some other antiques.

But her shop is not about antiques it is a treasure trove of handcrafted items that includes florals, handbags, dollhouses, etchings and all manner of arts and crafts items.

"Right now I have four crafters bringing in items," said Pierce. I have been a crafter for years. I use to do a lot of shows. But I always wanted my own store," she added.

While only open a little over a week, she has had lots of customers.

"Business really isn't too bad," she smiled. Not only can customers purchase already made items but Pierce will create floral arrangements to specifications. Her handbag artist can design to a customers taste and etchings can also be personalized.

While not a native Putnam County resident, Pierce refers to herself as having transferred from In Indianapolis. She has lived in the Owen and Putnam areas since 1974.

She is planning a Dec. 6 grand opening for the shop.

"Right now, I'm just having fun with all of it," said Pierce.

Crafters 2 Gifts is open all year and offers seasonal items even when they are not in season.

"I rotate florals and other things by season but plan to keep out of season items available too," said Pierce.

It will be so nice to have a shop that we can purchase gifts with a personal touch, instead of the same old stuff that Wal-Mart has, or having to go out of town to find great gifts. Good luck with your new shop. I know I'll be checking your shop out soon...
