He was born Jan. 27, 1932 in Spencer to Damon and Anna Louise Biddle Shields. He was a 1950 Spencer High School graduate. He was a Korean Navy Veteran.
Mr. Shields retired in 1987 after 33 years of service at IBM in Greencastle where he had been a powerhouse operator. He was a member of the Spencer Volunteer Fire Department for 23 years, serving as fire chief for two years. He was also a member of the Spencer VFW and American Legion, the Tri-County Sams and the IBM Camping Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Taylor Shields, two sons, Rick Shields and wife Linda of Spencer and Greg Shields and wife Susie of Richmond, a sister Carolyn Sue Hamm of Spencer, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Patty Price and Betty Matthews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at West and Parrish and Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer with Rev. Alvin McFadden officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday.
