Bulldogs ground attack too much for Clovers

Saturday, October 24, 2009

CLOVERDALE -- The first time Cloverdale met up with Monrovia it was with out senior running back Dillion Gray and the Clovers lost 50-0. This time the Clovers had Gray and the result was the same.

The Bulldogs beat the Clovers 53-0 on Friday in the first game of the sectional ending the 2009 season for Cloverdale.

"It came down to blocking and tackling and we didn't do either," CHS coach Kyle Winkler said.

The Bulldogs held the Clovers to a total of 51 yards on offense with Gray leading the way with 23 yards of rushing on 15 carries, while amassing 402 offensive yards for themselves.

"They are a great team and have great running backs and a great offensive line," Winkler said about Monrovia. "They are going to be a threat all the way through."

Monrovia scored on its opening drive, marching the ball 64 yards up field before capping it's drive with a two-yard touchdown run by Grant Watson with 7:21 to go in the first.

Cloverdale stuffed the Bulldogs two-point conversion attempt and held them for the rest of the quarter.

But 1:30 into the second quarter, Monrovia scored again. This time it was a 15-yard field goal by Richard Reeves making it a 9-0 game.

Then to add salt to the wound, the Bulldogs defense tackled Jeff Couse on the third play of the Clovers drive for a safety making it an 11-0 game.

From there, things just kept getting worse for Cloverdale. After forcing the Bulldogs to go four and out twice, Cloverdale fumbled the ball with just over two minutes to go in the half and the Bulldogs recovered it on the Clovers 44-yard line. Monrovia pushed the ball the distance in six plays thanks to a 33-yard pass that put the Bulldogs on the one-yard line. Then quarterback Tim Connor capped off the drive with a one-yard TD run. The Bulldogs then converted the two point attempt and walked off the field leading 19-0 at the half.

"We gave them a run," Winkler said. "It was 11-0 with just over a minute to go in the first half and they got that long pass down the side and put themselves on the one. It's a different ball game going into the half down 19-0 instead of 11-0."

In the second half, Monrovia had only five possessions and scored on all five. One possession was an interception by Reeves, which allowed the Bulldogs to score in three plays, making it a 39-0 game after Reeves shanked the PAT.

Cloverdale finished the season 1-9.
