Born Dec. 2, 1921 in Liberty of Union County, he was the son of Hilbert Lee and Lesta "Opal" (Highley) Brattain.
He was a graduate of College Corner High School Class of 1939, and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1944.
Dr. Brattain was a veterinarian in Greencastle for 61 years. He was a member of the American Veterinary Association, the Indiana Veterinary Medicine Association, the Friends Church in College Corner and the First Christian Church in Greencastle serving as a trustee; the Civil War Round Table of west central Indiana; a founding member of the Putnam County Museum; former board member of the Humane Society of Putnam County; the Putnam County Board of Health; 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM; Scottish Rite Shrine of Indianapolis; former president of the Putnam County Cemetery Board and Forest Hill Cemetery Board; former president of Sons of American Revolution Wm. Knight Chapter; former president of Greencastle Kiwanis Club; President and board member of Putnam County Comprehensive Services; and Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2006.
Survivors include his wife, June (Pollom) Brattain; sons, D. Drew Brattain and wife, Kim of Greencastle; David B. Brattain and wife, Jill of Whitestown, Mark Carr and wife, Julie of Greencastle, Gerald R. Brattain of Danville; a daughter, Dixie Lee Visker of Indianapolis; nephews, Jay Brattain and wife, Linda of Liberty and P. Lowell Brattain of Louisville, Ky.; a niece Candy Wilson and husband, Bill of Farmland; 19 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffrey E. Carr; a daughter, Rose Marie Steeley; and three brothers, Paul, Norman, and Harold Brattain.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Champion officiating. Entombment will follow at the Pinelawn Mausoleum of Forest Hill Cemetery with military rites.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Nov. 16 from 3 -8 p.m. with a Masonic Lodge Memorial Service to be held at 7 p.m.
