Bert, or Bertie, as she was known to her friends, was born in Putnamville Nov. 16, 1928. She was the middle of five children born to Samuel Edward and Margaret Louise Mace Brown, who preceded her in death.
Also going on before her were sister Frances Charlene Ellis and her husband, Lloyd, and brother Russell Edward Brown and his wife Joan.
On June 10, 1962, Alberta married David Arthur Thomas. Her beloved "Crockett" preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 2007.
Bert had worked as a cook and waitress for 35 years before retiring in 1977. She also spent many years helping her beloved Dave as he worked in the fields. After her retirement, she became involved in her grandchildren's sports, becoming their biggest fan. Alberta was also a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Greencastle.
Alberta's survivors include her daughters, Cheryl Lynn Bumgardner of Fillmore, Dawn Marlene Barger of Greencastle and Betty Louise Jolliff of Greencastle. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Other survivors include her sister, Olive Lucille Wood and husband Bill of Florida and brother Thomas Randolph Brown of Terre Haute, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home, with Pastor Ross Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow at Putnamville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
