Born Jan. 3, 1929 in Brazil, he was the son of Fred F. and Jean (MacDonald) Sawyer and was a 1947 graduate of Brazil High School. He married Dorothy Jean Endicott on Aug. 27, 1955 and she survives.
He was an United States Army Veteran having served as a staff sergeant from 1950 to 1952 in the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
In 1963 he purchased Kromme Plumbing and Heating and worked there until his retirement. Gene loved to trap shoot and his beloved dog Buffy.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Anthony Sawyer (Louise) of Seabrook, Texas, Andrew Sawyer (Lynn) of Franklin, Tenn., Terrence Sawyer of Indianapolis and Courtney Dickey (Andy) of Greencastle; a sister, Joanne Bennett; and eight grandchildren, Ryan and Colby Sawyer, Hailey, Andrew and Graham Sawyer and Hannah, Emily and Meghan Dickey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Lydia Claire Dickey.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle.
Private funeral services will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Putnam County or the Juvenile Diabetes Society.
