Tiger Cubs fend off Warriors on the course

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Making up action that was rained out last week, Greencastle's girls' golf squad held firm at Windy Hill Country Club Monday night, defeating Danville 212-230.

A missed putt on the final hole by Danville's Lauryn Luckey allowed Greencastle's Kenzie St. Marie to take medalist honors with a round of 49.

St. Marie was followed by rounds of 52 from Liz Johnson, 53 from Lokysa Scheuermann and 57 from Lauren Bridgewater.

Luckey's 50 paced the Warriors, with Karen Gramajo carding a 51, Makenzie Harding shooting 60 and Kelli Snodgrass adding a 69.

Greencastle head coach Brad Kingma said the round was one of the best the Tiger Cubs had shot this season and the improvements are showing.

"They are definitely getting better. Their ball striking is improving greatly. 212 is the best we've had at Windy Hill," Kingma said.

"We've got to keep working on the range so that things become routine. There's been some misses on the greens and short game so we'll need to make sure and work on that.

"Lokysa Scheuermann shot her best round of the season today and that was helpful for us in the team score," Kingma added.

Kingma said that with road trips coming up, the squad will be given the chance to show what they've learned in the first month of the season.

"We play at Deer Creek next, which has some similarities to Windy Hill. There are some slopes and hills that we will be familiar to us," Kingma said.

"This is about as good as we have played. We're going to be playing more road matches, so we'll see how we go from here."
