North Putnam baseball gets historic win against Athenians
ROACHDALE -- For the first time in recent history, the North Putnam baseball team got a win against rival Crawfordsville on Friday. The Cougars won 4-1.
Senior Kyler Badten, a big-game pitcher all year, threw a complete-game five-hitter. He struck out nine and allowed just two walks.
After the Athenians scored one run in the top of the first, Badten settled in. The Cougars (14-1-1) helped him out by answering right back.
Badten hit a two-out single in the bottom of the first, stole second, then scored on a single by senior Jake Haste.
Senior Brody Perrine hit a leadoff single in the third to give the Cougars the lead, then scored an insurance run in the fifth.
Perrine singled, advanced to second on a walk to senior Michael Herrmann, then stole third. He scored on a groundout by Badten, then Herrmann advance to third when the Athenians misplayed a ball hit by Haste.
He scored on a pass ball.
North Putnam and Crawfordsville are both in the same sectional and could be in line for a rematch later in the month.
The Cougars have the weekend off before taking on Monrovia on Monday and Tuesday.
Monday's game is at NPHS at 5 p.m.
