Tiger Cubs wrap busy week with win over Mustangs
Coming off emotional races on Tuesday and Thursday, the Greencastle co-ed swimming and diving team could have used a weekend to relax. Instead, they were met with a challenge from visiting Edgewood on Saturday.
Despite their exhaustion, the Tiger Cubs prevailed. The girls won 112-74 and the boys won 113-70.
"I was hoping that today would be strong," GHS coach Kent Menzel said. "Oh, man, oh, man did they surprise me."
The Tiger Cubs posted several season- and career-best times on Saturday coming off of wins against rivals Crawfordsville and North Putnam earlier in the week, two important opponents, Menzel said.
Rather than suffering from a let down, Greencastle came out sharp.
"This has been our most intense week of competition," Menzel said. "We invested a lot of energy in those two meets."
Swimming exhausted, the Tiger Cubs were led by sophomores Libby Brush and Mallory Meyer in the girls' races and junior Elijah Brattain and freshman Nathan Gobert in the boys' races, Menzel said.
Meyer and Brush finished one-two in the 200 individual medley, Meyer won the 100 backstroke, Brush finished second in the 500 free and both contributed to relay wins.
Brattain won the 200 IM by more than 20 seconds, won the 100 breaststroke and competed with two of the three relay champions.
Gobert was second in the 100 back to teammate Isaac Harms.
"Nathan Gobert has been swimming incredibly well," Menzel said. "Elijah Brattain is a talented athlete that never surprised me."
The race Saturday was the final competition of the calendar year for the Tiger Cubs, who will use the break to recharge before turning their focus to the upcoming county, conference, sectional and state meets.
Their next race is Saturday, Jan. 4 at Fountain Central at 10 a.m.
