City Council to choose between 2 for GCSC School Board spot

Thursday, May 29, 2014

The Greencastle City Council will have two candidates to choose between when it meets to decide its latest appointment to the Greencastle School Board.

A special 5:30 p.m. City Council session has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 10 in advance of the 7 p.m. regular monthly meeting at City Hall. Both meetings are open to the public.

The Council will interview incumbent Bill Tobin and fellow applicant Lisa Lazar for the position. The school board term takes effect July 1.

While the Council may chose to make its selection at its regular meeting that night, it could also opt for more time to deliberate the issue and set a special meeting for later in June.

Tobin, who serves as DePauw University director of Institutional Research, was named to the school board in February 2012, succeeding City Council appointee Monica Fennell. She had resigned a month earlier.

Tobin's position at the university involves the collection and interpretation of data about the institution. Through that process, his office provides support for policy formulation and decision-making.

Tobin and his wife have a fifth-grader in the Greencastle school system.

Meanwhile, Lazar has been a resident of Greencastle for more than 16 years.

With a background in athletic training, she continues to work part-time for Ortho-Indy and DePauw. Lazar has a bachelor's degree in athletic training and a master's in exercise science.

Also a member of the Area 30 Health Science Advisory Committee, she says her main focus is on raising her three children, ranging in age from 2-8. Her husband, Vince, is a teacher and golf coach for DePauw.

City Council President Adam Cohen said he is well acquainted with both Tobin and Lazar and called them "very qualified candidates."

Although Tobin currently holds one of the two seats appointed by the City Council, he was actually chosen by the school board itself (as stipulated in school board bylaws) to serve out the remainder of Fennell's unexpired term.

That seat is one of two representing residents within the city limits of Greencastle on the appointed GCSC board. The Council's other appointee is Denise Sigworth, who was named to the school board in June 2012.

The other members of the appointed GCSC board include Dale Piece, appointed by Madison Township Advisory Board, and Gary Haussin and Michael White, both appointed by the Greencastle Township Advisory Board.
