Greencastle and Cloverdale's girls' golf teams made the long trek to Rea Park Golf Course to take part in the Terre Haute South Braves Invitational Tuesday morning.

Led by a pair of 95's by Lokysa Scheuermann and Macey Masters, the Tiger Cubs placed eighth out of 12 groups over the 18-hole course. The Clovers, led by Harlee Fuetter's 98, finished 11th.

Vincennes Rivet won the invitational with a round of 343, followed by Terre Haute North's round of 352 and Gibson Southern's 360.

Rivet's Carly Waggoner also picked up medalist honors after defeating Terre Haute North's Megan Ramer in a playoff hole after both came in with rounds of 81. Jasper's Annika Harmon missed out after carding a round of 82.

Lauren and Lindsey Bridgewater finished out the Tiger Cub scoring, finishing the day with a 97 and 110 respectively while Haley Cash came in at 129.

Greencastle head coach Bob Hedge said that while the squad began to wear down as the heat and the full round took their toll on the golfers, the squad continued on from Monday's solid outing.

"I thought we played well but we got tired on the back nine," Hedge said. "We didn't play that side nearly as well as we played the front nine.

"We had the same problems with putting and chipping as we did yesterday, but that was to be expected. We get a day to practice that and see what we can do with that on Thursday."

Hedge pointed out that the squad cut 37 strokes off its round from the same match last year and was quick to note that even the newest member of the squad was up for the challenge.

"We had some great rounds today," Hedge said. "Macey Masten played her first 18-hole invitational and shot 95, which was terrific. Every girl we had from last year shot a better score today. That's always good to see.

"We're very happy with the progress we've made so far but we still have a lot of work to do."

Anna Spencer added a round of 114 for the Clovers, teammate Abbie Speas carded 116 and Abby Walker came in on 131 to round out the scoring while Hannah Nichols finished the day at 149.

Cloverdale coach Matthew Langdon was pleased with the round, knowing ahead of time that the scores would be higher with the girls playing 18 holes on their first outing.

"It's always tough for the girls to start with 18 holes, especially with a lot of girls playing their first rounds at these matches," Langdon said. "I was pleased with the round, though.

"We didn't give the girls a goal score wise like we usually do. We talked about taking it hole by hole and trying to put together a couple of good stretches.

"I thought we saw exactly what we wanted to see," Langdon added. "We saw some scores we can start out with and build toward playing our best golf when the county and conference matches hit.

"We saw some scores that were low enough that if we make the cuts that we need to make, we can be in a good position by the time those matches come around."

Langdon pointed out that Fuetter's sub-100 round was particularly pleasing to see.

"We always want to see someone shoot under 100 and Harlee did that for us with a 98," Langdon said. "I think she's got some different goals this year for herself.

"We also had a lot of good back nine's today. Anna and Abbie (Speas) were in the 50's and that's a place where they'll be most of the year. For our two freshman, it was about finding a starting point and improving from there."

While the originally scheduled match at Cloverdale on Thursday was canceled, Langdon noted that a week between matches to practice would be beneficial.

"This is a great time for us to get some practice under our belts with a young team," Langdon said. "We only have two upperclassmen and a week of practice is going to help.

"After getting this round in, they can really narrow down on what they want to work on, having seen things that worked and did not work today. We can really look and see how we can cut those scores down."

Greencastle, meanwhile, hosts Terre Haute North on Monday and Hedge said that the squad would be looking at building on the early week momentum.

"Our goal is to shoot better on Thursday than we did against Monrovia earlier this week," Hedge said. "Terre Haute North is a very, very good team, so we have our hands full with them.

"We won't be looking at their score as much as we'll be trying to improve and build on our score from Monday."
